Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down service. In Europe, tipping is often smaller (5–10%) or included. Use the service quality buttons (Poor 10% to Excellent 25%) as a guide, or enter a custom percentage. The calculator updates the tip and total in real time so you can see the final amount before paying.
How do I split a bill and tip between multiple people?
Enter the total bill amount, choose your tip percentage, then set 'Number of People' to how many are sharing. The tool shows Total Bill (bill + tip), Per Person (total divided equally), and Tip per Person. Everyone pays the same share. The split table at the bottom lists each person's amount. No need to divide manually.
Is tipping mandatory?
Tipping is not legally required in most places, but in the US it is a strong social norm for restaurant servers who often earn below minimum wage. In other countries, service may be included or wages higher. Use the calculator to see the amount; whether you tip is your choice based on custom and quality of service.
How is the tip calculated?
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100). Total Bill = Bill + Tip Amount. Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People. The calculator does this in real time as you type. All values use two decimal places. You can enter decimals for the bill (e.g. 42.50) and use the quick buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or a custom percentage.
What is a standard tip percentage in the US?
15% is the traditional baseline; 18–20% is common for good service; 20–25% for excellent service. In many cities 20% is the new norm. The calculator's 'Good' and 'Great' buttons map to 18% and 20% for quick selection. Custom slider lets you choose any value from 0% to 50%.
What is a standard tip percentage in Europe?
In much of Europe, a service charge may be included and extra tipping is smaller: 5–10% or rounding up is typical. Some countries rarely tip. The currency selector does not change the math; it only changes the symbol (e.g. € or £) so you can match your location. Use a lower percentage if service is included.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, so the tip is not inflated by tax. Enter the bill amount before tax in the calculator. If your receipt shows only the total with tax, you can enter that instead; the difference is usually small. The tool does not add or remove tax; it only applies the tip percentage you choose.
Can I use this tip calculator for services other than restaurants?
Yes. Use it for cabs, delivery, haircuts, hotels, or any service where you leave a tip. Enter the base amount (fare, check, etc.), pick a percentage, and optionally split among people. The currency selector is for display only; the math is the same in any currency.
