Frequently asked questions

How do I extract text from a PDF online?
Upload your PDF file. Click "Extract text". The tool uses PDF.js in your browser to get the text from each page. The result is shown in a text area; you can copy it or download as .txt. Everything runs in your browser.
Are my PDFs sent to a server?
No. Text extraction is done in your browser using PDF.js. Your PDF never leaves your device.
Why is the extracted text empty?
If the PDF contains only images (e.g. a scanned document), there is no selectable text. The tool extracts only embedded text. For scanned PDFs you need OCR.
What format is the output?
You see the text in a text area. You can copy it or download as plain .txt. Pages are separated with a "--- Page N ---" marker.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first. Open with the correct password in another app, save without password, then use that copy here.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tool runs in the mobile browser. Upload your PDF, extract text, then copy or download.
Is the order of text preserved?
Yes. Text is extracted page by page in order. Each page's text is concatenated with a separator.
Can I extract text from images in the PDF?
No. This tool extracts only the embedded text layer. Text in images (e.g. scans) is not extracted. For that you need an OCR tool.
Is there a page limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very long PDFs may take longer. For typical documents (e.g. under 100 pages), extraction works well.
What is the difference between PDF to text and PDF to JPG?
PDF to text extracts the text so you can copy or edit it. PDF to JPG converts each page into an image. Use PDF to text when you need the words; use PDF to JPG when you need images.
